Tonight in Fusion we talked about Pride.
Wikipedia defines pride as “a lofty view of one’s self or one’s own. Pride often manifests itself as a high opinion of one’s nation (national pride), ethnicity (ethnic pride), or appearance and abilities (vanity). Pride is considered a negative attribute by most major world religions, but some philosophies consider it positive. The opposite of pride is humility.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride)
As Jody was talking tonight I began to think about my personal pride. I know so many times I feel like I am a good person and in many times a better person becuase I am a christian who does all the religious practices. I look down on people who aren’t like me because I think i’m “it” or “big stuff” or “super christian.” Why do I do this? Well the answer is simple. I have pride in my life. The thing that bothers me about my pride is that it’s hard to control. It’s like i’m chewing people out everyday without ever even saying anything. I constantly nag about people to my friends or my nagging about them in my thoughts.
We looked at a few verses in the book of 1st Peter. Here is what the bible says about pride.
1 And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 3 Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. 4 And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.
5 In the same way, you younger men must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, serve each other in humility, for
“God opposes the proud
but favors the humble.”[a]
6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
I know in my life I need to work on my pride issues. We all do as far as I can tell. In Luke 18:14b it says “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” My prayer is that you allow God to humble yourself so that He can use you for service. As we talked about moving from self to service and now we are talking about moving from pride to humility in fusion. I hope that we can all become less prideful and more humble. Let’s stop looking down on people and loving them like Christ already loves us.
